What is a Bite Correction Appliance?
Bite Correction Appliances are a specially designed bar that works, together with elastics and a removable lower retainer, to aid in the correction of your bite and aligning your teeth and jaws.
How does a Bite Correction Appliance work?
Elastics
- Replace your elastics with a new elastic often, every 4 hours is ideal, removing them only when eating and brushing.
- Always carry extra elastics with you. You will be given a supply of elastics that will last you until your next scheduled appointment.
- If you are running low or need more elastics before your next appointment, please feel free to come in to the office and pick some up or call us and we would be happy to mail you some.
Lower retainer
- The retainer is to be worn FULL TIME with your elastics. You will remove the retainer when you are eating and brushing. You can drink cold water with your retainer in
- Clean your retainer with a toothbrush and cool water every time you brush your teeth. Do not place the retainer in hot or boiling water as it could distort the shape of your retainer.
- For a deeper clean, soak the retainer in diluted vinegar for 20 minutes, then brush it thoroughly.
- Always store the retainer in the case provided to you - DO NOT wrap your retainer in a napkin, tissue or paper towel. It will be easily thrown away.
- Keep your pets and retainers safe - dogs will chew your retainers so keep them out of reach!
- Bring your retainer and model to all appointments so we can ensure the retainer is fitting correctly.
What to expect
- Teeth will be tender for the first few days as they adapt. Take Advil or Tylenol if necessary.
- Cheeks may become sore and irritated for the first little while as your mouth gets used to the appliances. Use wax as needed on the areas causing irritation. You may also want to rinse with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of water) 2-3 times a day, until the irritation subsides.
Taking care of your appliance
- Make sure that you give yourself extra time to clean carefully and thoroughly around the bars. Extra food and bacteria will accumulate in these areas and it is important to keep them clean.
- Avoid sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy foods. Take smaller bites of foods to avoid breaking appliances. Avoid playing with your appliances - keep your tongue and fingers away.
- If you have any trouble or concerns with the appliance, please call us!
